The term was first used in the 2010 documentary 'Catfish' - in which Nev Schulman discovered the gorgeous woman he fell in love with online was a middle-aged, married mother.
In catfishing there are really two victims. One is the person whose picture was used in the scheme and the other is the individual who has been duped into believing they were creating a relationship with someone with whom they were not.
The motivations behind catfishing are varied. Sometimes it’s done out of boredom, sometimes from revenge or at times catfishing springs from the desire to embarrass someone else. Other times the culprit is building a relationship as part of a bigger scam for monetary gain.
